Caldas, part of Colombia’s renowned Eje Cafetero (Coffee Growing Axis), is one of the country’s most celebrated coffee origins. Its tropical climate, volcanic soils, and abundant water sources provide ideal conditions for producing exceptional coffees.
Today, dedicated producers known as juiciosos are driving a strong focus on quality, refining traditional processing methods while experimenting with new techniques and varieties.
Since the early 19th century, Colombia has been known for coffees with full body, bright acidity, and a rich finish. Diverse growing regions and nearly year-round harvests create a wide range of cup profiles, while the continued growth of specialty coffee and certifications such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, and Organic further strengthen Colombia’s reputation for excellence.
Founded in 1969, Finca La Palmera grew from 3 hectares to 165 hectares under the stewardship of Ignacio Rodriguez’s father. Today, Ignacio continues the legacy with a focus on specialty coffee, inspired by embrujo meaning “spell”. His belief that great coffee should evoke the “magic of coffee.” To improve consistency and flavor, he is investing in laboratory and microbiology facilities to better understand coffee processing.
One of the few large estates in a region dominated by farms under 5 hectares, La Palmera is an important year-round employer, providing workers with housing, meals, and premium wages. The farm also employs 48 women year-round, many of them single mothers, whose meticulous sorting of cherries and parchment helps ensure exceptional quality.
